It's a little chilly, but the sun's out.
And you know, I came across this sugar maple tree.
And it caught my attention because there's liquid on the side of the tree.
We often think of people tapping maple trees to collect the sap, usually in February and March.
This is April right now, actually, but the sap is pretty sweet.
Now, something tapped this tree.
I'm going to crouch down.
There's a tiny little quarter inch hole right there.
I don't know if a woodpecker did that or an insect, but it's certainly oozing sap.
The sap is running down all the way down the trunk.
But what's really fun is there are a whole bunch of ants, and many ant species really like to feed on sweet liquids or sweet substances.
They've been attracted to this maple sap and so they're kind of swirling around here drinking the sap.
They're no dummies, right?
They're getting a sweet beverage from this sugar maple.
And this early spring chilly day.
Remember you can find your own outdoor elements when you visit area parks and natural areas.
We'll see you soon.
