That's right.
Welcome to Experience Michiana.
Thank you so much for being with us as we get out and explore the Michiana area.
On this week's show, we're going to look at the next video in the well crafted series for the Elkhart County Convention and Visitors Bureau.
We're going to look back at our trip to the boutique of Granger from last March.
We're also going to find out about Zoo Boo and Dave's over at the zoo with Josh right now.
You know, I come to the zoo every single week because of two young daughters, and this is our favorite place in the world to go to.
But I like the fact that the animals are usually behind a fence, that I don't really have to be as close to them.
But I'm here with Josh is the executive director and Josh we're talking about today.
So we decided to get some of the more creepier guests.
Yeah, every time we do the zoo boo!
Any kind of thing on the media, we have to bring out the creepy crawlies because that's the perfect time of year.
So not only do I have Luca the ball python here, which has so many phobias about snakes, but I also have this pretty cool guy.
So this is called a Madagascar hissing cockroach.
You said you wouldn't hold it, but I was going to try to talk you into maybe just one time.
Okay?
I was about to hold it for a second, but then it ran up your arm, went across your back right before we started.
I'd rather hold the snake all the way.
I'll let you touch the snake.
Okay.
You could hold the snake.
Okay.
There you go.
So what kind of world do we live in?
Well, I'd rather hold a python than a cockroach.
I also feel like you're holding these.
That's pretty cool.
I mean, that's pretty awesome, though.
I mean, people love snakes, and they they the kids love the cockroaches, and they won't hold it at first, but then once they get used to it, they start petting it.
Then I can get I can usually get a kid to hold the cockroach.
So yeah, I don't know what it is about me that I'd rather hold this.
It's an insect thing.
I think it's just it's how fast he moves.
Like, I like the fact that this doesn't move at all.
Exactly, exactly.
Until he wants to bite me.
But there's no venom or anything, right?
So, yeah.
Bites me.
It's just a bite.
Yeah.
Not with the ball pipe.
Okay.
But they're, they're constrictors, so they can strict their prey, so.
Okay.
Yeah.
And he's full grown.
So a ball pythons don't get as big as the huge pythons, you see.
So.
So he'll just trap me like he'll just try and squeeze me.
Okay.
Yeah.
But yeah, they're one of the many.
I mean, like, we like to bring the creepy crawlies out for zoo, but is one of our favorite events every year because it brings out anywhere from 14, 16,000 people over the two weekends.
We feel like it's a safe and fun way to do trick or treating around the zoo and get to see the animals.
Beautiful weather in the fall.
We decorate the zoo and all the fall, and this year we've changed up a few things, so we've been listening.
We get emails once in a while about how scary it can sometimes be to come to the zoo as a little kid and see the monsters around the zoo.
So we really decorated the zoo this year, Fall Fest.
And then there's a monster track.
So if you go to the gator deck and you want to go see the monsters, you can go through there.
But every kid doesn't.
It doesn't have to be around them.
So it's kind of a choice you can make.
And then even the tree trail is kind of softened up a little bit.
It's very fall feeling.
But then we'll still have our haunted train at night.
It's we do that on Friday and Saturday nights, and people love the haunted train, so every year just keeps getting bigger and bigger.
I'd be writing back, well, maybe your kid just isn't ready.
No, no, no.
But obviously there's like, that's what the zoo is for.
Like, it's for like, my daughter is three and then seven months old, so the seven months is oblivious.
But the three year old is so they're so emotionally aware of everything that the last thing you want to do is give anyone nightmares.
Exactly.
And we and we don't want that memory of that.
There's nothing worse than a kid comes to the zoo, and their memory of the zoo is scary.
And so we want to make sure that we cater to everybody.
So that's awesome.
You have to kind of choose your own adventure when you're here.
Yeah, that's a good call.
So what else can we see besides a python and a cockroach like, I mean, we'll be doing we'll have, I mean, most of the animals because the weather is so great is going to be out.
You'll be able to do the draft feeding.
You'll be able to see the bears running around the cafe if you go have lunch.
I mean, basically, I'm pretty much everything is still even the I mean, we've had such great weather.
Even the monkeys are still on the island, so it's great.
Yeah.
It should it should be a great event.
I think its head is starting to come out now.
Yeah, he's starting to come out a little bit and feel a pulsating on top of me.
Yeah, I love the feel of him.
Like there's something about it I know.
And I think that's, you know, that's why we had these ambassador animals.
I mean, people do, even though we call them the creepy crawlers when we bring them out for Halloween for fun.
It still has an education message because people do worry so much about snakes there.
It's one of the scariest parts for them.
So they, So to be able to get up close, it does change people's perceptions.
I think the scariest part of the zoo is the price of the lettuce to feed the giraffes.
And I'm just kidding.
You know what we always say?
You're not buying lettuce, you're buying an experience.
I'm like, can I bring my own?
Oh, God, it's starting to move.
All right, you can have it back here.
So, I liked it when it was.
No, I'm kidding, I we love it every single time.
Like we do everything.
The carousel, the train.
Like, I love the new train, the sound system, the everything on it.
Here comes the train now I think so, yeah.
It's like, I would seriously love to be a train conductor for one of the days.
A lot of people say that when they retire, they'd love to be come back to the zoo and work on the train.
So I'm sure it's staff favorite.
Like every staff was.
Probably go through the tunnel.
I love everything about this place.
It's just it continues to get better and better.
And I know like tell me a little bit about Zoo Boo before we move on to other things.
But what when does it run through?
Like, is it just till Halloween?
Does it stop on the.
So it just keeps changing every year.
So this year it's two weekends.
So it's going to be the next two weekends.
And it's going to it's a little zoo is Sunday.
So Sunday doesn't have the haunted train.
It runs during the day.
But Friday and Saturday we run 9:00.
So if you check our website has all the information pricing, we do have to charge a little bit for members.
It's one of the only events that we charge for members because believe it or not, we spend about $25,000 on candy to be able to serve people.
Candy.
Candy is a very expensive.
So people, I think, sometimes forget how expensive it is to to some work this as a nonprofit.
So but again it's always a fundraiser for the zoo.
So everything that comes into the zoo is going back into the zoo.
So I love it.
We got costumes.
So I think the first year, first weekends, I think superheroes, the second ones, villains and monsters.
So we're going to have characters here that you can meet and greet, which is always fun.
Last year we had the Witch sisters and that was fun.
And they'll be superheroes.
We had Superman and Spider-Man, and the kids always loved that.
So just trying to add stuff every year.
So no, it's great.
And again, the zoo just keeps expanding in different ways and it's really a phenomenal place to come to.
It's just so relaxing.
I love the size of it.
I love everything about this place, I really do.
I mean, I would gladly just be an ambassador for you and just go out and tell everyone about the zoo and tell me a bit like in the parking lot area when you see this, the new the new area.
Can you tell me about that where we're at with that as well?
Big Cat tracks is going to be done by the end of December, and that's the first expansion and recent history to the zoo.
And, you know, really the new animals will be the second year, but but it'll brand new habitats for the tigers and the leopards.
It's kind of the final phase that makes us a modern zoo.
It gets all the big cats out of cages and into what we consider modern exhibits.
But really, the expansion is going to be great.
The playground down there is going to be awesome.
So people are going to love that.
The big tunnel that tigers walk across with deer living under them.
And then you can see if you saw into the park.
The city is doing parking expansion right now, so it's just the area just keeps growing and growing.
So we're pretty excited.
I love it, I love it.
I've said it before because in my past, even as a kid, I never loved zoos that much.
I always felt like guilty leaving them because I always felt like it just wasn't.
Yeah, yeah, it wasn't like an animal, like what it seemed like would be natural for them.
And here it just feels like you've really gotten a great mix of what they need.
And I know there's so much more to the zoo in terms of, you know, preservation and differences conservation.
Yeah, I should say.
And but you've really made it feel like there's less barriers between you and the animals.
In a way, that's really the goal of a modern zoo is really.
And that's why we knew if we were going to be proud of our zoo here in South Bend, we had to be a modern zoo.
And you shouldn't be leaving a zoo feeling that you should be leaving feeling.
What can I do for the animals in the wild?
What did I learn?
What was the experience?
A great day with the family and we're transitioning to that now.
I'm not trying to start a rumor since we've got a couple of minutes left here, but it's smiley real okay because every time we've been over there, right.
My daughter loves smiley.
I'm like, I've never seen them move.
Now that's always a controversy.
He is real.
We have we have video of him leaving in the winter.
We'll have video of him going back in at for that for the winter time.
So.
Okay.
He's he's definitely real.
But that's what gators do.
They just float around I know I'm like sometimes I'm kind of tempted to like you know give them some bread.
Just know I know he he definitely moves okay okay.
All right.
Just want to confirm that for my daughter.
So and I know like this is obviously going on right now and over the winter you've started doing more things over the last few years.
So this year there's a few changes and a few new exciting things.
So are you still going to be opening every weekend?
Yeah we are.
And so yeah, every year we're changing.
So you know we always did our gift of lights.
We're actually for the first year taking a break from that.
So you know we have the big illuminate event that's happening.
So this year we're taking a break from Gift of Lights.
But we're going to be open every weekend after November 30th.
And for the holidays we'll be doing events in the lodge as we'll have Santa and different characters coming out on the weekends.
And then January, February, March will be open every single weekend for winter days.
So just an opportunity to come.
You can still feed the giraffe, see the lions inside, go in the learning center, experience the animals and just stay connected to the zoo where we used to just kind of close for the year.
Yeah, yeah.
And kind of lost people's attention.
So just trying to keep people connected.
Yeah.
Look at this.
I know he's we watch.
He'll go up around your back.
Look like that's that's disgusting to me like that.
You know, as I said, I'd rather the python kiss me than had this cockroach on my shoulder, so.
But no, that's great that you're doing that over the summer.
And of course, Santa will be a big hit as well.
Yeah, exactly.
All right.
Thanks so much for showing us around.
And good lord.
Yeah, we'll see you at two.
You're braver than I am.
I'm here with Terry from the Elkhart County Visitor Bureau.
We're here at the Learner Theater in downtown Elkhart.
This week on the show, we're going to talk about your well crafted series.
So if people have been watching over the last few months, we've been showing and sharing different videos that you guys created, highlighting different well crafted businesses and different opportunities in the community.
So can you give us an overview of what well-crafted is and why you decided to do this video series in the first place?
So what the well crafted series really shows is the the inside stories, the a deeper dive, and a better understanding of the creators, the creatives, the entrepreneurs, and the artisans who really make Elkhart County special and unique.
Yeah.
And I know on this episode, we're going to show one of those videos talking about a local restaurant.
But there are things happening.
And again, one of my favorite restaurants is here in Elkhart, one of my favorite restaurants in the whole area.
But Elkhart really does have a lot of great dining options.
It really does.
I mean, you could, I think, easily eat out at a different place, eat out every night of the week, and not not hit the same place twice or or even in a month, because there's so much culinary talent in Elkhart and it's all different styles too.
So it's not just one kind of thing.
It's really a different kinds of cuisines.
Could be Italian, could be steaks, it could be sandwiches.
And you'd find a great meal out there.
And I know that you also have events coming up, like, tell me about this event, highlighting the five breweries that you have in the county.
So well crafted signature snips runs from the entire month of October, and we worked with all five craft breweries in Elkhart County for each of them to create a unique beer just for this month.
And we really want to highlight how much diversity there is even in the craft brewing scene.
So, you know, in Elkhart we have yakitori and brass elk.
Yeah.
And West Wind Brewery in Goshen, there's Goshen Brewing Company, and then in Middlebury there's Wedgewood, and they're all they all have great big fan base.
They all have they're all unique in their own way.
And they have great brew masters who turn out great beverages.
What is interesting of a funny story about Brass Elk?
So there's a drink there called The Irish Dave.
Right.
And I was in there for lunch with somebody recently, and I've been there a few times and I've noticed this drink, but I've never asked about it.
So he said, wait.
He's trying to make make me feel awkward.
And he said, is that named after that guy that used to be on the radio hears from, you know, blah, blah, blah.
And they said, no, no, not at all.
It's named after some guy named Dave who sits at the bar.
His ancestors are from Ireland.
And I was like, oh, okay.
So I thought for a moment I had a drink named after me.
But it's not true.
I absolutely do not.
And this week on Well Crafted this month.
And tell us a little bit about who we're highlighting this week when it comes to food.
So this is a fine dining experience with an extremely talented kitchen, really driven by farm to table values.
They have been an institution in downtown Elkhart for many years, and their story about how they try to elevate the dining experience and in every way, both from the service perspective but also from the kitchen, is truly remarkable.
All right.
So that's what we're going to have a look at the well crafted series.
And if people want to watch all these videos outside of this, they can actually find them as well right there online that you have them listed online as well.
Right?
Yes.
I would recommend going to the Experience Elkhart County YouTube page.
Okay.
All right artisan, let's check it out.
At artisan, we are really focused on an elevated fine dining experience.
One thing that makes artisan really special is our well crafted tasting menus.
We offer five different courses with five wine pairings that we select special for each course.
I think that makes our experience really unique.
If you're coming through the front door, you're going to see our beautiful wine cubes.
So that's definitely a part of what we do and what we are about.
If you're coming in through our bar area, it's a little bit more approachable, a little bit more relaxed, but we focus on elevated fine dining, French cuisine and American cuisine.
A nice mix of both.
Reservations are recommended, but we do accept walk ins.
We really want to be an approachable fine dining establishment, so I think allowing people to come in a little bit more casually and and to walk in makes makes that happen.
The bar and the lounge are a great spot for walk ins, and then if you're looking for more of an elevated experience, make a reservation.
We can do something special for you.
Hospitality is really about curating memories for people, and I think anyone coming in, if it's a birthday anniversary, a business dinner, if we have that information, we can make sure that your time is really special with us.
And then when you're leaving you, you have a new memory and maybe a new place to come back to and make memories with someone else.
Artisan has been around for ten years now.
We're a fine dining restaurant.
We focus on sustainable seafood, fresh local produce.
We offer tasting menus with wine pairings, which is something really cool that we do.
I think we are really lucky to have some amazing members of the community frequent our establishment here at artisan.
If we see a guest and we recognize them, we're going to make it our mission to learn a little bit about them, learn about what they like.
So the next time that they come in, they feel like they're having a curated experience.
So I would say a lot of our guests are people that are coming back week after week.
We know them on a first name basis.
We know what they like to drink, they know a little bit about us.
And I think that's what makes this job and makes artists and fun.
We're a part of the community and we get to have that.
The extra special moment with everybody.
We have some guests that have been coming in since we opened every single Saturday, same seat at the bar, and that is it's a symbiotic relationship for sure.
I would love for people to walk away with this thinking of artisan for your next birthday, but also thinking of us for your Wednesday night out with the girls or or your your next quick bite with a burger, with your with your brows.
We have some casual dining elements.
We have burgers, but we also have a fillet so you can go from either end of the spectrum.
The Navare Hospitality group is such a fun group to be a part of.
If you're looking for an elevated dining experience, you can come to artisan.
If you want a quick bite for lunch, you can go to bird in the hand.
We have a Mitchie that just opened up with the Jackson rooftop.
So just here in Elkhart, we have so many options, and I think being able to have a few different places that you can go to that you can depend on, that, you know, that you're going to get great service, great food, and you're always going to leave happy.
I think that it's really a pillar of the community to have multiple spots that you feel that loyalty towards.
We are finally stepping through the doors of a place that I have wanted to visit for a while, and it's just down the street.
It's fairly new.
We're heading to Bouquet of Grandeur, my new friend Trudy.
Thank you so much for having us here today, because this space is just beautiful.
When you walk into it, you can smell the florals.
And this is all about giving the people just a beautiful piece of florals that they can take home with them.
Yes, absolutely.
And tell us about the business itself, because I see you have some stuff that's grab and go here too.
Okay.
So what else do you guys offer here?
A bouquet of Granger?
Yep.
We always offer, grab and go and a couple different price points.
We have a small and a large wrapped bouquet.
Okay.
And then we always have a small and a large arranged bouquet.
And so those are always available for customers to come in.
We don't need any call ahead, but we always have something.
Yes.
Yeah.
Last minute does not bother us because I'm one of those last minute people.
I'm like, oh, shoot, I forgot something.
So you could just stop in here and grab it.
Yeah, absolutely.
We always have them ready.
So these are the small ones.
These are our small ones.
Yes.
And we say small in quotes because they're fairly decent sized and they're very intricate.
Yeah.
I mean, that's really what the beauty of it is and what you guys do here.
Yes.
So everything that we create is designers choice, meaning that our floral designers, myself included, and we have a lead designer as well.
Get to sort of take their artistic interpretation of the flowers that are feeling seasonal and in the moment.
Yeah.
Yeah.
So.
So you're not just grabbing a pile of tulips, correct?
Yes.
This is something that you want people to see when they come over.
Okay.
Yeah.
Yeah, yeah.
Okay.
And then these ones are your large ones.
Yep.
So these are our large, again, these are.
Thank you.
These are always made, fresh daily.
We always have something different.
And we try to have them feeling as kind of seasonal as we can for these.
Okay.
And then you also have kind of more of the.
I'm heading to a concert and I need to give that floral arrangement to my loved one.
Yep, yep.
These are wrapped bouquets are perfect, for gifting really easily.
And then when you get them home, you can actually arrange them in the vase as you want them to be, too.
So if you have a vase already, these are perfect for you.
If you want something that's that's vast and ready to go, the arranged are perfect.
Now, a lot of people aren't really good at arranging themselves, right.
So talk to us about that.
What goes into designing this?
I know, don't give away all your secrets.
What?
You gotta help us out a little bit, right?
Yeah.
So we curate our color palettes weekly.
We try to bring in, sort of seasonally inspired color palettes.
So you're seeing a lot of our spring colors right now, a lot of our pastels.
And then as we get into summer, you'll see some more bright and some more fun things.
So we curate our color palettes.
We always bring in some really pretty garden roses.
These are one of our favorites.
My wedding bouquet was these.
It's really.
Yeah.
They're beautiful.
That wasn't like the ivory roses.
Beautiful.
Yes.
And then our designers will put them together.
Yeah, but but we really just try to go with what we have on hand and sort of, be inspired by the flowers that we have.
And that's really the inspiration behind this, because, yes, this is not where you guys started this talk and bring it all back.
Yeah.
So I got my start as a flower grower.
I was sowing seeds kind of shortly after Covid, just growing a lot of flowers.
We have a small boutique flower farm.
So I was growing extra flowers.
I had too many.
So what do I do with these?
To kind of support my flower growing?
Have it.
So I started selling, at farmer's markets, and eventually connected with florists who wanted locally grown flowers.
And I was able to source and then sort of began training on weddings.
So I do have another, flower business called Cherry Road Florals.
Yeah.
And Cherry Road Florals does full service, luxury elevated weddings.
Okay.
And that's before they do that.
Yeah.
And it's it's so much fun.
I absolutely love it.
But I also had the desire to be able to help people with everyday flower needs.
Exactly.
Yes.
And so that's where this came into play.
Where it's the holiday flowers, it's birthdays, it's pick me up.
Everything like that.
We're able to supply here.
I don't need wedding florals every day or every week.
Yes, we do do wedding flowers here.
And we're, we're getting a lot of great clients reaching out, and we're, we're excited to be doing some, not not necessarily smaller weddings, but we do offer that.
So if someone wants to get a bridal bouquet, a bridesmaid bouquet, like a one on centerpieces, you know, getting married at the park or something, they just need a yes.
Yes, we can help them with that.
Yes.
Okay, great.
Now this is heading into the space.
Yes.
I mean, this is amazing.
This is really from scratch for you guys.
Yeah.
So when I first came into this space, I had a dirt floor, my walls that you'll see were not there.
And I had the chance to sort of design the space from scratch in terms of what I wanted as far as the layout and the look of, of the, shop.
And we're right here in State Road 23.
But I love how open this space is.
In fact, your whole entire space is open.
But this is more of your retail side.
You want to talk to us about that because there's a lot of women entrepreneurship built into this too, right?
Yes.
And so obviously I am this is a women owned business.
My husband is very involved.
My family is involved, but I am the owner.
And so I wanted to bring in a lot of women owned and small business gifts into our shop.
So we have our candles are our most popular item, and those are sourced.
There's a there's a maker in Mishawaka that we work with a lot for those, but we really try to work with, Indiana based small businesses when we can.
And then we mix in with other.
Yeah.
Excuse me, I have to I have to point this out because this is really cool.
Yeah.
That and that's annotation your your different pottery.
Yes.
Cups around her mugs.
Those are really pretty too.
Yeah.
So the idea with the gifts too was that aren't those adorable.
Yes, I love those.
The idea with this too is if someone needs a gift for someone and they don't know what to get them, like they can walk into our shop and they can find something that wraps up the work.
Yes, and we can have them pick something, or they can pick it on their own, because sometimes you want the flowers, and sometimes you need a little gift to go extra with it.
You have to have cards too, of course.
Okay.
Horror story.
That's important too.
Yeah.
Oh, look at these.
And a lot of these are we have some that are made by local artists, but you know.
Yes.
Like able to source a lot of cards and yes, that's very cute.
Now, I know you guys have a lot going on here already in the store.
We do, but there's stuff going on in that.
Can we check it out?
Right.
Yes, actually, let's go look, because this is where the magic happens.
Yeah.
Right.
Okay.
So we're in the workshop.
Is this what you call.
Yeah, sure.
Love it.
But what's great about this space is that you guys can actually host workshops.
Yes.
So one of the things I really wanted to provide were workshops for our community.
So floral design workshops, is, is kind of the basis of what we do back here.
We offer workshops every month.
We have a different selection of workshops.
So we do.
Yep.
So like seasonally inspired again.
So we have Easter workshops coming up.
A lot of spring focused workshops right now in the shop.
And those are always on our website if anyone is interested.
We also always shows on social media, so we always have different ones per month.
We'll have a lot for Mother's Day two.
I was going to say that, I mean, you're coming into the spring, so I know the flowers are heating up and yes, that is.
Yeah.
But they're blooming.
Yes.
We go.
And this is really the time where I feel like everything kind of comes together.
Yes.
Especially in the floral realm.
Yes.
For sure.
And then we also do offer private workshops as well.
So if, if you get a girls group together.
Yeah, that's that's our favorite.
If people don't see something that they want on the website as a public workshop or they just want the space to themselves, we offer that, we ask for a minimum of six guests to come, and we can do any of our workshops that are available as a public workshop.
We'll make a private workshop, no extra charge.
For those that might be fun for like a bachelor.
It's so much fun for like that.
Yeah, maybe even like Girl Scout.
Absolutely.
Yes.
Yes.
I'm actually doing a talk tonight or this week at a Girl Scout troop meeting.
Yeah.
And we're going to do a little flower arranging there, I love it.
And again, going back to it, not everybody knows how to make floral.
So you are our master.
Yes.
And so we when we do the workshops, we, we'll talk about the color palette, we'll talk about the overall sizing.
And then I go through or our lead designer goes through how to actually put the flowers together in a way that's esthetically pleasing.
And I will tell you that a lot of people are intimidated by this.
They but everybody walks out.
Everybody's arrangement is going to be different then then another person in the workshop and everyone's as beautiful.
Always by the time they walk out the door.
