Feels great.

I do it again.
Yeah.

But never just for me.
You gotta share it with another.
I got to show, to give.
Let I want singing show.
Take a look and say a beautiful morning that turns into a beautiful evening.
And together make beautiful art.
And if you wanna see that, come along with me.
That's right.
Welcome to Experience Michiana.
I'm so glad you're here with us today.
We have a great show for you.
There's so many things happening all across Michiana.
One of the things we were able to check out is the Women's Entrepreneur Summit.
This has been happening for nine years now, and they have a great line up this year and anybody can attend.
So we'll give you all the details on that.
Also have the opportunity to check out the VHS.
That's right a VHS Christmas carol that's happening down in Goshen.
It is a benefit, we'll tell you all that you need to know for that.
But first up we're talking about Breyers Edge book up in Granger.
And well, there's a lot of books to read here and so much more.
Check it out.
Let me set it to be in a new space.
And I hope you're going to be joining here too, because there is a lot to look at.
There's a lot to see and do.
And I have my new friend here with me.
We're at Briers Edge, and I love that there's a new space for books.
Where have I boutique shop up in Granger?
Because this is something that we haven't had in this space because.
Right.
Right.
That is so exciting.
What made you decide to create prior such book?
A lot of it was actually built out of necessity.
Okay.
So it was just a series of events that led us here.
I had been selling books on eBay.
My husband lost his job, and it was just kind of one of those opportunities kind of came along.
The store that was here before was resale furnishings, and I was a vendor here and then talking with her.
Yeah.
Yeah, yeah.
So and talking with her at the end of the year, she knew I kind of had this on the back of my mind and the space was becoming available.
So it was kind of one of those we just do it because the time was right and presented itself.
So I love it.
So you're not new to books?
No, no.
Tell me about your background and your love for books.
Oh, I've just always been a book quarter.
You know, there's like, a thing that they say that there's two different hobbies.
There's book buying and book reading, and I've.
I've been guilty of both.
So I had a lot of used books, and I felt very hard into used books because I decided to homeschool my kids.
And it was when I started building our own library at home for that.
And then I just fell into a rabbit hole full of amazing old books.
And so that's where that really kind of started.
And then I just fell in love with the old books and started finding value in that, and that people were looking for these and trying to get them back out in the world.
So that's where the eBay side of things came.
All right.
And now you have this spot here, which is fantastic.
I love how you guys decorate here.
Just whimsical.
Yes it is.
What made you come up with the name?
So that was also part of our homeschool journey.
It was just trying to come from the, oh, the kind of, like, corporate world.
And that's the space in between.
And so it seems kind of prickly.
You're trying to be protective, but really inside it's very warm and cozy and like a rabbit done kind of a way, you know.
Okay.
So there's so much to see here.
So what are some of the things that people come into your store to look for?
A lot of gifts, a lot of crafts, new books, use books.
We get a lot of people actually just comes to hang out.
So yeah, I don't have a lot of those spaces.
Exactly.
We just need a space to, like, where can I chill and read a book?
Yes, it's even better.
So we have people that come in and they bring their knitting.
They didn't bring their crochet projects and just kind of come on their way to work or something like that, or on their way home and just stop in for a minute.
We had a couple of events recently, but otherwise I normally have like a community puzzle going on, and that's something that people actually stop for my house because I have a community puzzl Well, let's go look over here, because I did see I see you do have yard here too.
But we do.
We do your whole crank corner.
So there's a variety of these cool vendors regional or I try I try very hard.
We do a lot of, you know, wholesale, you know, purchasing online.
But what I try to find a lot of local vendors or local ish or small businesses.
Sure.
Okay, so even if it's somebody in California, I'm trying to find the small businesses that are hidden in, you know, the hidden gems and all of that.
So that's what a lot of, like, the yarn was a small business.
And so you have Dixie Bell.
We do have Dixie belt.
Dixon.
Yes.
This is the place to be.
Yes.
And so that was Democrat who still she's, you know, she was the one that owns resale furnishings.
And we talked.
So we just kind of flipped roles in that way.
So now she's she's selling things here.
So it's been working out for her to have that here.
And that's been wonderful to add to our our craft section.
That is we have tons of things like look at all the things I can see.
I know behind you, it's kind of an offshoot thing, but one of my employees brought in an old typewriter, and that has.
But you can, and it works.
I mean, this is great because, I mean, we know because we're up with this, but, like, kids have never maybe even seen a typewriter.
Children are fascinated by this.
They're drawn to a rotary phone here too I know.
Right.
So all ages, honestly, all ages have been drawn to it.
And I have seen more, more moments.
The other.
There we go.
I have seen more moments between grandmothers and their children over that typewriter.
That is really cool to see them connect over something.
So that's it's a hidden little gem here, but that's a special little thing.
Yeah, this is great.
Especially we're coming up on the holiday season.
So I know there's a lot of stuff that people can are looking to get.
And this is always a great way where you can maybe find something that you didn't necessarily consider before.
And just shop around.
Right.
Yeah, I love that too.
I want to check out this kid.
Yes, please.
Come on.
Always looking for those cute, unique spaces where kids can come together.
I have to say, do you guys have, like, storytimes here?
Because this is.
We do.
Yes.
Okay.
Oh, look at surprise.
Yes, you.
Yes.
And all of these books.
Are these for sale?
Yes.
Everything here is for sale.
Okay.
And we had.
So this is actually kind of a new renovation that we did.
We had a lot of it was kid level, and all of us were feeling it in our knees a little bit.
So we, we brought it up a little bit so that we have it still accessible to children, but also to their grown ups that are shopping for them as well.
But we have a little bit of everything all the way from the board books.
Old classics, brand new things, you know, all the.
Yep, yep.
All the graphic novels.
So we've, you know, a little bit of everything.
And can people order books, too?
If there's something that maybe you don't have here, but they want.
Yes.
We have access to a lot of a lot of books through our distributor, Ingram.
Okay.
And so chances are we can get most things within a week or two.
Oh that's great.
Yeah, it's a really quick turnaround.
I know I have a kid who's always like, I want this book.
And I'm like, I can't find it anywhere.
This is the place where we need to go.
In a place like this is the thing.
Like, we can have like, one, one copy of one thing.
And so it's it is hard to keep everything in stock.
That's the challenge that we've okay that we have encountered.
But being able to order things and get them that quickly, I don't think people really feel that much of a difference than like, you know, and they're recognizing that they're able to support us rather than like shopping on Amazon or something like that.
Been on the waitlist for three weeks for one book from the sure that I hear that too.
And I love to you even have a mystery books that people could do.
Yep.
How are you guys?
How's it organized within here?
Like, what are your.
So most of the most of the things we have kind of starts with fantasy, romantic romance.
General fiction and literature and sci fi.
Towards the front.
And then, like the young adults on the other side of this wall.
But then it kind of comes back in here into the the younger kids.
And then we've got the middle grade kind of books here.
Graphic novels.
Yeah.
Of course.
Got to have that.
Have to have a thing for a Christmas.
Well, we got to, you know, the these amazing advent calendars that came out.
We had to get those out.
Oh, Harry Potter.
Yes.
Got a lot of Harry Potter and then so.
And then our used section right there that's currently out in shoppable.
And then what we had the idea if you haven't already thought of it, maybe it's here or not, but I see the Narnia.
Yeah.
So you have a door to Narnia and here that's hiding something.
Not yet, not yet.
That was actually.
You said not yet.
So that was actually the plan for this door at some point.
You kidding me?
No.
So I wanted this to be like the Narnia door that went on.
Yeah.
My gosh.
Okay, so it's going to be behind the door.
So right now it's it's unfinished.
It's not it's it's not a pretty room.
Anything like that.
It's definitely a pool barn.
You know, this this whole place is a pool barn.
But if you really feel it back there, and it's not climate controlled or anything, so it's not super comfortable back there yet.
In the closet.
Yes.
Yes you will, but we're working on expanding our used book section back there.
Okay.
And hopefully within the next month or so to get that chapel and accessible to everybody, because we have been blessed with so many book donations and we need to get those out.
And there's an interest for used books to write.
Like, I mean, I'm one of those who I love to open up an old book and okay, it's weird, but I like to smell it.
Yeah.
Oh my God, hear my people.
Thank you.
Yeah.
New books, two new books, two new books that they have their own.
Yes, yes.
But why is that a thing?
I don't know.
I don't know, it's just nostalgia or something, so.
No.
I know you guys also host events here too.
You want to tell me about that real quick?
Yeah.
We have, you know, just outside events.
There's a lot of people that bring in their, their talents.
So we've had painting classes.
We've had, a local baker had little like a the little dumpling craze that's been going on.
She was in here recently with a heart cake.
South bend.
So a lot of different things.
And we just try to host, you know, local authors coming in, you know, getting their word out, getting their books out.
And, you know, recently there was another big like thing where it was this big new release.
And so that was a big we had a midnight release party and we had about 45 people in this small space, if you can believe it.
And it was amazing.
So you guys don't know anything about a quarter rose and thorns and all that?
Yeah.
I mean, it's amazing.
There's a huge draw for that, right?
But and you guys can host book clubs here too, right?
Yes.
And so and that we don't have any of our own currently.
But we have a lot of that do come in.
Oh great.
And the space is available to use.
We have two comfortable couches and a lot of seating, you know, and we've just found it very comfortable for people to come in and just enjoy that time with their friends.
Where can people find more information?
Hours, location and all that good stuff.
So all of the social media and all the, you know, those kind of spots.
We have Breyers Edge book.com and you can order online as well.
You can do things like that.
Yeah.
So you can order, you know, if you see something that we have in stock, you can order it and we can hold it here in the store for you and that kind of thing.
So I hope everyone keeps you in mind for especially the holiday season, but all year long too, because this is up to create space.
Thank you for bringing this up to Granger.
Yeah.
You bet.
Thank you.
I'm here in Goshen at Ignition Music Garage, and I'm here with Ben, Alex and Andrew.
And first of all, Ben, people might recognize you from being on a very popular game show that's on an evening that requires you to be very smart.
So you were on that for quite a while as well, on jeopardy!
Is that right?
So you were on there.
I had a pretty good run on jeopardy!
Yeah.
You did.
Okay.
That's what gives you all the free time now to be able to do shows like this.
Now I'm just I'm just writing the trivia.
Hi.
Yeah.
Productions.
And so we're not here today to talk about how smart you are, but we're here today to talk about a VHS Christmas carol.
So tell me about that.
And why are we doing this here in Goshen?
Yes.
So a VHS Christmas Carol is a one act musical adaptation of the Charles Dickens novel A Christmas Carol, and we are doing it as a benefit show for The Window, the food bank here in Goshen.
Nice.
And I know that they've been through a lot recently as well, which a lot of people know about.
So they really need the funds at this time and really need the support, which is probably one of the reasons why you chose them.
Yeah, absolutely.
We had actually started planning this before, some of the challenges they faced this year, but even more glad now that we're able to offer them a little extra support.
I know there's already been a bunch from the community.
Alex, what's it like being married to such a genius?
Does he remind you often, or I have to remind him more, I think, oh, is that what it is?
Oh, he's too humble.
Yeah, he's a little humble.
And it's better now that we're done taping jeopardy, I think.
Yeah, yeah, that you actually get to see each other.
Yes.
And and so when it comes to this show, what's your role in this and what are you bringing to it?
So I am the stage manager as well as a few other things, but primarily stage and production management.
And what I do is I kind of oversee all the people and make sure everyone is safe and healthy, and having a good time and having their time respected.
I helped scope out all of our actors and our designers and technicians for this as well.
I'm kind of just the people manager, and then on the day I'm the one standing in back calling all the shots, making sure we all do what we said we were going to do.
Nice.
That sounds like life there.
Really?
You're just keeping them on track.
Andrew, what's it like working with a couple?
No, no, I'm just kidding.
Tell me a little bit about the show, because I know you got to see it in Chicago.
So what?
You both did, right?
You both got to see it.
So tell me a little bit about the show.
What can people expect?
Because it's a little bit different.
It is.
So this is a show by StarKid productions.
They are a theater troupe that began at the University of Michigan all the way back in 2009.
Some folks might know them from some of their early work.
They did a lot of parody musicals, especially their Harry Potter musicals.
They branched out into a lot of original pieces in the last 5 or 6 years, and this is one of them.
They actually put it up in LA in 2021 and released it on YouTube in 2022, and they've since done two full productions of it in Chicago.
We were lucky enough to see one of them, so they released the rights for it last year, and we thought it was just a perfect piece for the type of show we wanted to put on.
Yeah, and Ben, it's a perfect venue for that kind of feel, right?
Because tell me a little bit about it.
Like a lot of synthesizers and, you know, that kind of 80s feel going on with this.
Right.
So and this seems like a pretty good place for that.
Yeah.
It's fun to do a synthesizer focused show in a cool music space like mission.
It's also, you know, we didn't want to do this in a 600 seat theater where you're sitting 70ft away from the action, like we're on stage, and the audience is going to be right here when we're performing this.
And there's a lot of moments in this where you want to feel that energy.
You want to feel that connection to the actors.
Yeah, perfect space to do that.
I love it, I'm sure if it does go well, and then there is an opportunity to put it in front of 600 people next year.
I'm sure you'll do that too.
Yeah, yeah, yeah.
No, but it is really cool.
And Alex, when is this happening?
And obviously around Christmas.
Right.
So.
Sure.
Yeah.
So we open on December 11th.
We will run the 11th, 12th and 13th.
All shows will be at 730, but it's only about 45 minutes.
So it's a nice tidy evening.
And yeah we will we're looking forward to seeing everyone here.
That's perfect.
When I hear people say they went to a concert on the arches performed for like three hours, I'm like, that sounds like my worst nightmare.
I can't sit still.
Like I'm like, shiny thing, like, you know?
And so.
So that sounds perfect.
It sounds like a real nice evening.
And I've got a three year old and a seven month old so I could be home by nine, so that even sounds better.
And and again, with this space, Andrew, what are you hoping to bring to this space and use it for?
Because I know you were even talking about, like, all the cassettes over here and you're like, oh, I wonder if we could bring them into the show somehow.
So it gives us a lot of opportunities.
We're lucky enough that there is a lot of, a lot of concerts put on in this venue.
So for the type of show it is, we are lucky enough to have some lights and some effects in place and a stage ball and a disco ball.
But in terms of kind of keeping with the static that was in their original production and just the 80s synth pop theme, we're going to be doing some interesting Christmas decorations in here.
Nice.
Where the audience is going to be sitting.
No one's going to be far from the action.
They'll be involved.
They'll be right up close.
So it's going to be a lot of fun.
We're looking forward to it.
It's funny because that 80 sound, when I was younger, for some reason, it was like nails on a chalkboard to me.
And now the older I'm getting, the more I like love 80s music and I love that sound.
So I don't know if that is that a thing that happens a lot of people is that when you know you're starting to get older, when you start to love 80s, but there is something about it now when you listen to the music and the recordings and the arrangements, I'm like, it goes in cycles and a lot of it is present in pop music right now, like the these sort of 80 synth sounds.
If you listen to Sabrina Carpenter's music, they've got this like big juicy pads happening.
It's I definitely won't listen to her, but I try my best.
You know, I used to work on radio and I was like, oh, I have to play Justin Bieber again.
Like, I'm going to quit.
So I quit after I had to play him again.
But but now I get it.
And even like the weekend and stuff like that, they are just the weekend.
It started to use it as well.
And, and when it comes to the tickets, Alex, what is the cost and is 100% of the proceeds go to the window or how is that working out.
So sure.
So all ticket sales there will be $10 a piece and they will.
Every penny of it goes to the window.
Yeah, we are keeping nothing for ourselves, and any extra donations that come in are also all going to the window.
I love it just because we really feel that this is a good show for caring about your community and think it's a very straightforward way to do it.
And again, Ben, why are you so passionate about the window?
And I know you all are, but like, what is it about the window that you really wanted to choose them and not choose one of the other nonprofits in Goshen?
Sure.
You know, the window has been a a, a food bank mainstay for Goshen for a long time.
You know, they they went through some challenges this year.
It's been really cool to see the community rally, to support them and make sure that those services are continuing to be offered.
Yeah.
You know, food insecurity goes up during the holiday season.
The weather takes a turn.
It can be difficult for people who don't have access to a place to stay.
And so we wanted to make sure that we were doing our part to support the important work that the that the window does.
And again, $10 for a ticket is really like, you know, it's it's an inexpensive evening out.
Yeah.
Right now.
So and I love that so and and where can people get tickets.
Sure.
Well you can't get them at the door.
We do encourage you to go to Ignition Music tickets.
They will have tickets available for this production.
Well that's great.
And I really do hope people do get tickets in advance.
It's always great to know when it's going to be busy.
It's exciting.
Don't wait until at the door.
Just do it online.
Andrew.
When it comes to this story at Christmas Carol, people know that is this different?
Does it stick with the actual traditional story just in a different way?
Or like tell me a bit about that, because I know you're a bit of an expert on the actual story.
So.
So believe it or not, it actually pulls a lot directly from the Dickens text, despite the fact that it sounds like it's a parody.
This is not a parody show.
It is a very straight retelling of Christmas Carol.
Yeah, it's a very more upbeat, again type of music.
It is is more upbeat, generally speaking, but all the hard hitting parts are just as hard hitting.
All of the story beats and elements from the original are there.
So it's I think that matters to people when they care so deeply about a story like that, you know, you don't.
I mean, some people might want to go to something that's a parody, but I think of it stays true to the actual story.
I think it's a lot more fun to see what you've done with it, as opposed to just changing it.
So I love that.
So all right.
Net slash tickets is where you can get the tickets.
It's going to be here at Music Garage which is here in Goshen.
And yeah thanks for putting it on.
Thank you.
I know you're putting all this time in and you're doing it so that you can help other people, some that you'll never meet.
And I think that like really matters.
So thanks so much.
This is always a fun time of the year, and I didn't have her here last year, but she's back.
My friend Cindy, I was so glad to be here because you brought the bling this year for us.
I love it.
Now you guys are heading into the ninth Annual Women's Entrepreneur Summit, which is really exciting.
Almost a decade of doing this, right?
Right.
It is.
I mean, not crazy because this is something that is really special that you offer to the community.
It is really excited about it, actually.
Big news for us.
We just were awarded the Better Business Bureau Torch Awards for really company for integrity.
See your Health Women's initiative.
So we're going to be celebrating that too.
That's something to celebrate for sure.
I'm very excited about it.
And this year too.
We have a keynote speaker from northwest Bank, Heather Lear.
She's a vice president of our region.
She's amazing.
And northwest Bank has been a big supporter of ours, just like PNC Bank and First Source.
I love it.
You guys have such great connections within the community, and that's one of the things I love about everything that you guys do with entrepreneurs on it, because it really is a connector point for many women across the entire region, right?
It is.
And you know what?
We do attract women from all around scores Fort Wayne, Chicago, Indianapolis, Grand Rapids, Michigan.
But most of the people that come here in Saint Jo County are Elkhart County.
That's about it.
And I know.
This is your space in here?
Yes.
You've been doing this for a while now.
What does it mean for you to have this event and to be able to host it here at least?
I love it.
And honestly, it's an event I look forward to every year because of the amount of women that come and others.
But we can connect with each other and it's so inspiring.
So it's one of my favorite events.
Awesome.
And Cecilia, this is your first time a temporary time.
Yes I'm excited.
You have to tell me.
I am so excited to know about it that you might want to share with other people who are watching right now and what might they look forward to.
I think it's a good platform for women, and Cindy has always, always, always had something on board for women.
She used to do the Women's Expo downtown of the Century Center, and we've loved it, loved it, loved it.
And I think this is good to showcase women in their different businesses and also give a light on subjects that women need to be aware of, like domestic violence, finances.
We need the same tools that men use to get to be CEOs and CEOs and CFOs.
So we need those same tools, and some of that generally isn't always available.
And that's why I like this are really so important.
Right, right.
It is not always available to us.
We're not always in the boardroom or the where they're making them at the table where they're making the decisions.
We're usually kind of in the background.
So I think this is a good table so that women can learn how to be at, you know, in those spots, to be on the board, to be, a branch manager or, at the bank, being able to finance women in different areas.
Absolutely.
Now, Cindy, you've been doing this for a while.
I can't believe you're coming up on ten years.
Pretty soon.
Pretty soon.
This is our ninth year for the Women's Entrepreneur Summit.
And you know what?
When you were talking, I was thinking about when we very first started was in 2018, and that was our first summit that we had.
And statistically during that time, the this, I guess you'd say, US census said that women only held 2% of the women owned businesses in Saint Joe County, 3% in Elkhart County, and 2% in Berrien county, which is right next to us.
And the reason why?
I mean, there's a million reasons why women don't, you know, make it in their own business.
But the four main reasons were women couldn't find role models.
They couldn't find mentors.
They didn't know where the resources were, if we had any.
And also fear, you know, lack of confidence.
So we've built the women's summit on those four ideas.
And that's what we focus on.
And every year at the summit, it's a huge success of so inspirational.
I mean, I have women coming to me afterwards and they tell me they came here, they didn't think they wanted to start a business, but now they do.
And it's from the other women who came and they learn from them.
So it's not just the great presentations and the great presenters and networking.
And of course we have delicious food to I might add, it's the other women.
I mean, really, something magical happens when women get together.
And this event is not just for people who are entrepreneurial, ready or maybe lead in a business, right?
It's someone is interested in even just connecting and learning more.
This is a great space for them.
Yeah.
If you want to be in a space where there are other women who are going places, want to try to build a business along with their families, are looking to move up in business.
Or if you're a man who wants to come and hang out with a whole room of ladies, I don't know why, but they love it and I love I've had men come and say they like coming because they like learning sort of the soft sell relationship approach to building a business.
So yeah, you've been a part of the process along the way too.
What kinds of things have you learned?
Community mainly.
I think it's great to just be surrounded with other women and just knowing that there's others out there that have my back and we're a team.
It's a community.
That's what I love about it, I love it, and I love that.
She said that there are resources available, and that's exactly what you guys provide here, too.
So let's talk about what the day looks like.
Well, it's very exciting when you come in and we have a great breakfast.
I love the food.
Well and then we have networking.
We do a little speed networking so people get a chance to know each other.
We have 15 businesses that we spotlight that help women grow their business and get connected into the community.
They're here all day.
We have, whole morning of, you know, seminars, each there's 18 seminars throughout the whole day and even for that.
So yeah.
So each seminar is just ten minutes.
We hope you get two things out of each seminar.
And then you would leave here with 36 new ideas that could take you forward in the air.
It looks like it's like a a half a year new ideas.
And then in the afternoon, we have the graduation for the Women Entrepreneur mentoring class.
Okay.
The one that we have, Cedar Health Women's Initiative, and we have a great group graduating.
And then this year we added awards.
So we're giving.
So we're part of you know how you know women grow their business.
But we also want to help develop the ecosystem.
So now we're the awards are about people or women who help other women.
And they're not only their business but in their personal life too.
And it's open to everyone.
So I hope you guys do get your tickets.
You want to make sure you get that ahead of time, but there's something new that you guys are doing this year, too.
Well, we actually lowered the price of our ticket.
Okay.
We added a place where everyone could have a seat at the table.
So we have six seats where you can have your seat and five other seats.
So we have that option at a big discount.
And then we're also doing two for one.
So we say bring yourself and invite her.
So there's two people for the price of one.
So we're excited about find your friend.
And sometimes you need just like a little a little kush to get to where you want to be.
Right?
Because sometimes it's challenging or it's, scary.
Yeah.
Thank you.
That's a good word for it.
But, I mean, you could be a very successful entrepreneur, too.
And this is exactly what your group does here, too.
Thank you so much for telling us a little bit about it.
I do want to point out you have a awesome book too.
Yeah, we have some great gifts that we're giving people or signing up this year.
I have, my books been out a couple of years is about how to start a business.
So if you've started a business already, it's back to the basics.
If you're thinking about starting a business, it get you started.
I have a woman in my mentoring program.
She doesn't have access to a computer, so we're using the book to take her right through a start a business.
And guess what?
It works.
It's amazing.
I love that.
And then we also have a great little gift bag we give everyone.
And this is our this year, our theme one conversation can change everything.
And think about it.
If you think back in your life of every single decision you ever made, there was always someone who said something to you that helped change that conversation.
I love that, so I know lots of conversations are going to be had here, so make sure you guys get your tickets.
